There comes a moment in time, when you are sitting around with your friends, laughing about how much you like and enjoy SL, that you and your friends wonder how easy is it for a newbie who has just rezzed into the world to find their way out of the starting area and into their new life in Second Life.

It’s a lot harder than we originally thought.

This is my alt in the new newbie area.

Isn’t she cute? Yes, I know you can’t see her face, or her name, but she’s has this Valkyrie vibe with a fairy thing hovering around her shoulder. Okay, that’s cute. Following the instructions, stand on the red button to view the video. One of the Moles, or lindens cause he did not say his last name, starts to talk in the video. Except, I’m not interested in that. Instead, my friend has joined me in this challenge.

He’s going to make a male alt.

To my left is the actual starting area that explains things. There was even a kiosk to buy lindens in the starting area.

Here’s my big avi, and the newb as side by side comparisons.

Eventually, after exploring around a bit, we went to the Firestorm newbie area. Tons of free items there.

What I didn’t expect to find was multiple male avis in my inbox. One was real bad.

He offered to updo my avi in exchange for my submission.

He didn’t take no for an answer.

He didn’t take “leave me alone” as a hint.

Then he tore into me about how I’m a chick with a dick and he doesn’t go for those. That was after the big avis showed up in his inbox to tell him to leave my new avi alone.

Dude… incel much? The point of this was to try to go from newb to smexy without having to spend a single linden.

That wasn’t the only issue. We went to Vista to try to get a head and ao. Except we got griefed. How the hell are newbies supposed to get anywhere if they get griefed of worse trying to look around. It’s no wonder SL has such a bad rap.

After a couple more rounds of “where can we go to get these avatars upgraded?” we gave up. I was able to get a Genus head after 3 days.

Honestly, not only is the learning curve hard for newbies, but to make some of the smexy avis is almost impossible. You need to buy lindens or have a benefactor to help you through the process. It’s no longer that easy if you have no clue what you are doing and where you are going.

So, even though it sorta worked. It was a fail.
