The Impact of Misinformation

Or: Thanks for the Vacay

So… a couple of weeks back, one of the broadcasters from the Gorean Whip had an issue.

Paraphrasing his words, but essentially, he was at a set at a sponsor when he got an uninvited teleport request, which he took, to another part of the sim. The request turned into what I believe were sexual demands upon the broadcaster. I could be entirely wrong about what the broadcaster was demanded to do by the teleportee, but that’s not an uncommon occurrences on Second Life.

The broadcaster, who still remains nameless to protect their identity, asked the Gorean Whip Staff Chat what to do about what happened. The advice I gave, I am quoting here, and it is the exact same thing Black Ort would have advised, as well as others I have talked to who were not part of the Gorean Whip.

“I would handle it by leaving the sim and blocking him. there are other places to go. And then once at the other place, document and submit it to management.”

I got called out by a new manager at the Gorean Whip, who will also remain nameless. They questioned my thinking: “why would you leave the sim of a paid sponsor because of one person who doesn’t own the place?”

I replied with my reasonings, “DJ security and safety, mainly, (Manager). Leaving the sim and documenting allows the staffer time to calm down.”

The manager didn’t take that well and told me to stay in my own lane. I replied all business, “Thank you for your opinion, (Manager). I’ll take it under advisement.” Then I closed the group chat. They won’t take advice from someone who has been a part of teaching Second Life safety for the last several years, that’s no skin off my teeth, right?

Wrong.

The broadcaster that this all happened to at the very next staff meeting tells everyone that I showed him such disrespect that he will show me the exact same thing because he assumed I was a manager. Everyone still listening was told to ignore me completely, and not in a friendly way. Yes, I was still listening, even though the staff chat was over. I should have recorded it.

Two weeks later, I get called out for using the only way I feel comfortable in letting the Gorean Whip staff know that Black Ort and I are on the air – an incoming gif and an out going one. Usually of two cute cats. I got told by one manager who probably shouldn’t be managing broadcasters specifically. I do the two gifs out of courtesy to the Gorean Whip. I don’t have to do it at all. Going forward, I won’t be.

Jay then gets into my inbox and tells me that due to comments made in the staff chat, I am being muted in discord.

Yes, I got angry. No One Bothered To Ask Me My Version Of Events. The advice I gave was the exact same advice Black Ort would have given. Leave. But according to those three managers on the day in question, that’s not something a broadcaster is allowed to do.

Nope. Jay’s solution: mute the “problem” instead of actually find out what happened.

See, the manager that told me to stay in my lane is also one that has aggravated Black Ort. Decisions made at a management level that affect his show are done without consulting him first. Hell, I couldn’t even show any enthusiasm or energy for being the first event at Whipstock. I really wanted to say a lot about Whipstock, but being slapped by yet another manager because it was “not the first event” angered me. The only other event before mine was an hour of opening ceremonies.

So, tell me how I wasn’t broadcasting the first event?

Worse… it was assumed that I was going to do multiple of the same events during Whipstock. I only promised one event on my own, and the second was our Ort Cloud show.

Nope. Apparently, I or rather we had agreed to multiple shows over the two weeks, including two Ort Clouds, and it the manager who told me to “stay in my lane” who ordered this. Black had spoke out about it in the Gorean Whip discord and they got their nose in a twist, and told him that THEY would be discussing it with HIM. Black doesn’t know them. Black knows Jay, and got in his inbox about it. Ort Cloud down to one show at Whipstock, and I’m only supposed to do my one show too.

Except, less than 48 hours before a second event “I” was scheduled for, I got reminded of it. Except, over a week earlier, I said I was unavailable for anything else at Whipstock. No other broadcasts other than that first day. No auctions. No including myself in it. No scavenger hunt. Nothing.

I had pneumonia in December and was not shaking it even that late in January. That one set I did, that one event, especially with the rather enthusiastic support (yes, that’s sarcasm) I received by the Gorean Whip management staff in doing it left me more than drained and exhausted. The fires earlier in January didn’t help, and I was on and off an O2 canula most of the month. I had to refuse the event. I know my hostie had not scheduled me for anything but the one event, so that was Whip Management assuming I would do it.

Saying that I couldn’t felt as if I was making excuses. I wasn’t even supposed to be at home originally when the event was going to happen. I purposely schedule my events that I must attend so that I don’t end up with issues like these. Yet, there it was, an issue and I was the one at fault.

So this is the second time the same manager has aggravated Black Ort.

From the discussion where I was told to “stay in my lane,” I’ve learned that broadcasters of the Gorean Whip can not leave a sponsor’s sim during their set for any reason.

So, anyway, Jay muted me for two weeks without getting my side of the story. After the initial anger, and Black Ort calming me down, we both realized with En’Kara coming up, there were reprecussions that were going to affect the Gorean Whip that Jay either did not anticipate or didn’t realize would happen.

If I am muted, I can’t coordinate with the other broadcasters about the Ort Cloud.

If I am muted, I can’t say or show that the Ort Cloud has the stream.

If I am muted, I can’t perform at En’Kara.

If I am muted, I can’t see the day to day drama of the Gorean Whip staff.

Black Ort is not willing to give up HIS time slot for any other event anywhere else. Since he travelled once this year, he will not travel again.

I was willing to negotiate for Black to be at En’Kara.

Was.

I have worked with two of our teachers. We will be holding two classes on the Tuesday at En’Kara. But nothing like last year. If the Ort Cloud is at En’Kara, that’s because a sweet girl asked Black to bring it there and that girl was not I. I was willing to do the closing formal dance if he was willing to take a break from his show, but circumstances say otherwise.

Thank you, Jay, for this vacation from all the Gorean Whip drama. I really needed it. I have pneumonia real bad and I need to recover.

I’m going to go and decorate my new P+ house. Not sure if I like it, but I really don’t want to have a smaller place. I wish Second Life would bring the smaller houses onto the bigger lots. Not everyone wants a huge house.
